Benedictine Hospital in conjunction with the Ulster County District Attorney's Office operates a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner program. Services are free of charge to victims of sexual assault, delivered by specially trained SANE registered nurses who give 24-hour, 7 days a week coverage for the private unit. The nurses are trained in forensic evidence gathering techniques and the psychological needs of the victim. If an injury requires immediate medical treatment, the patient is referred to the hospital's emergency department for further evaluation and treatment. All services are performed in a separate, private area. SANE provides shower facilities, toiletries and replacement clothing if needed. If a victim chooses to file a report (within 30 days), the Crime Victims Assistance Program (CVAP) will counsel and support the victim through the prosecution process.
